I came across a statement, attributed to the late Jaroslav Pelikan, that goes something like this: The history of Christianity can be roughly traced by the kinds of people in succeding ages who are considered virtuouso Christians. The martyr
gives way to the monk.
In the Middle Ages the monk gives way to the priest.
During the Reformation, the priest is replaced by the scholar-professor.
Here in America, I think it is my duty to report that the scholar-professor has been replaced by the motivational speaker.
